Alcohol, smoking & vaping laws

Thailand has clear rules on alcohol, tobacco, and vaping. As a visitor, the main things to know are the legal drinking age (20), limited hours for retail alcohol sales, strict no-smoking zones, and a complete ban on importing and selling e-cigarettes and vape products.

Alcohol

  • Legal age: You must be 20 years or older to buy or consume alcohol in Thailand.
  • Retail sales hours: Convenience stores and supermarkets typically sell alcohol only during set windows (commonly 11:00–14:00 and 17:00–24:00; exact times can vary by province). Bars and restaurants serve during their opening hours.
  • Religious holidays: Alcohol sales may be restricted on certain Buddhist holidays and election days—hotels and some venues may still serve registered guests.
  • Driving: Drink-driving limits are strict; penalties include fines, jail, and deportation for serious offences. See Driving in Thailand.

Smoking

Thailand bans smoking in many public indoor spaces, on public transport, and near schools and hospitals. Look for designated smoking areas—often marked zones outside malls, airports, and some restaurants. Smoking on beaches in major tourist provinces has been restricted; check local signs. Dispose of butts properly; littering fines apply.

Vaping and e-cigarettes

If you currently vape at home, plan to abstain during your trip or use approved nicotine alternatives available locally (if any)—not imported vape devices.

FAQ

Can I bring one vape for personal use?
No. Import is prohibited regardless of quantity. Devices may be confiscated and you may be fined.

Can I buy alcohol at 7-Eleven anytime?
Usually not—check the posted hours on the fridge or ask staff. Rules differ slightly by location.

Is smoking allowed on hotel balconies?
Many hotels are smoke-free indoors; some allow smoking on balconies or in designated outdoor areas—ask at check-in.
