Thai customs checks are usually straightforward for tourists — but undeclared cash, banned items, or excess duty-free goods can lead to fines or confiscation. We want you to pass through quickly and legally.
Most travelers use the nothing to declare (green) channel if they comply with limits below. When in doubt, choose declare (red) and ask an officer.
Duty-free allowances (typical tourist limits)
Personal effects and reasonable clothing for your trip are generally exempt. Published allowances for arriving passengers include:
- Cigarettes: up to 200 sticks (one carton) per person
- Cigars or cigarillos: up to 250 g total
- Alcohol: up to 1 litre of spirituous liquor per person (must be 20+ years old)
- Personal goods: reasonable quantity for personal use — not for resale
Exceeding limits requires declaration and duty payment. Rules differ for land borders; air arrivals follow the above in most cases.
Currency declaration — over USD 20,000
There is no limit on how much Thai or foreign currency you may bring in — but if the total value exceeds USD 20,000 (or equivalent in other currencies), you must declare it on the customs form and to the officer at the checkpoint.
- Applies to cash, negotiable instruments, and combined amounts carried by one person.
- Failure to declare or false declaration can result in fines or legal action.
- Same rule applies when leaving Thailand with large amounts.

Medication and health products
- Bring prescription medicines in original packaging with a doctor’s letter (English) for controlled or large quantities.
- Personal-use quantities of common medicines are usually fine; commercial quantities are not.
- Strong painkillers, sedatives, and ADHD medications may contain controlled substances under Thai law — check with the Thai FDA or your embassy before packing.
- Traditional herbal products from abroad may need inspection — declare if unsure.

Drones, e-cigarettes, and vape — import restrictions
- E-cigarettes, vape devices, and e-liquid: Import and sale are prohibited. Devices found in luggage may be confiscated and you may be fined. Do not bring vapes into Thailand.
- Drones: Import for personal use requires compliance with CAAT (Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand) registration and may need temporary import paperwork. Flying without registration near airports, royal sites, or Bangkok CBD is restricted. Declare drones at customs and register before flying.
More prohibitions: rules and prohibitions.
