Traveling in Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai is relaxed compared to Bangkok—traffic is lighter, distances shorter, and the historic Old City (square moat and walls) is easy to explore on foot or by bicycle. For longer trips—to Nimman, Doi Suthep, or night markets—use songthaews, Grab, or (if experienced) a rented scooter.

Old City and central areas

The Old City is roughly 1.5 km square, bounded by a moat and remnants of ancient walls. Top temples (Wat Phra Singh, Wat Chedi Luang), Sunday Walking Street, and many guesthouses sit inside or just outside the gates. Walking and cycling are ideal here; motor traffic inside the moat can still be busy—look both ways at gate crossings.

Red songthaew (rod daeng)

Chiang Mai’s iconic red shared pick-up trucks run fixed-ish routes and also act as hop-on taxis. Flag one down, tell the driver your destination, and agree a fare (often 30–50 THB per person within the city). They do not leave until they have enough passengers on some routes—be patient, or offer to pay a bit more for a private ride.

Tip: Songthaews to Doi Suthep wait at Chang Phuak gate; negotiate the return trip or arrange a meeting time.

Grab and ride apps

Grab (car and GrabBike) works well in Chiang Mai—fixed upfront prices, no haggling. Useful for airport transfers (CNX), late nights, and trips to Mae Rim or Hang Dong when songthaews are scarce. Bolt also operates in the city.

Renting a scooter

Many visitors rent 125 cc scooters (roughly 150–250 THB/day). You should hold a valid motorcycle licence—police checkpoints are common. Always wear a helmet; ride defensively. Read our Driving guide for licence and insurance details. Mountain roads to Doi Suthep and Doi Inthanon require caution—sharp curves and occasional fog.

Other options

  • Tuk-tuks: Fine for short hops; agree price before boarding.
  • Yellow songthaew: Commuter routes to suburbs—not usually for tourists.
  • Domestic flights & bus: See Domestic travel for links to Bangkok and other provinces.

FAQ

Is Chiang Mai walkable?
The Old City yes; Nimman and the airport are too far to walk from the centre—use Grab or songthaew.

Do songthaews run at night?
Some do, but less frequently. Use Grab after midnight or from remote areas.

Is a scooter safe for beginners?
Chiang Mai traffic is milder than Bangkok, but inexperienced riders still crash often—consider Grab if you are not confident.
